o is for ostentatious

i kinda lost track of time and didn't realize that may was nearly over when i started this shirt.  oops.  anyway, i used the "dark secrets" blouse pattern from "twinkle sews."

the shirt was meant to loose and billowy, with poofy balloon sleeves.  however, the pattern didn't account for a shortie like me, and thus the sleeves were like bat-wings.  ie, when i raised my arm, the whole shirt lifted up.  also like a flying squirrel.  not ideal for a teacher like me.
thus, i took in the sides a bit, and actually cut out sleeves.  instead of black swiss dot silk chiffon, as recommended by the pattern, i opted for a black swiss dot cotton.  no thanks to sewing with silk.  the neckline had pretty latticework with gold studs at the intersections.
the balloon sleeves were borderline ridiculous, but i'm secretly a huge fan.  i wore the top today, on my last day of school, with april's chevron-striped skirt!
'round back, there's a keyhole at the neck, with a cute gold button.
i only got 2 compliments from kids, hehe.  oh well.  i dig it.  i'll wear it out this weekend!

stay tuned for june's garment, which hopefully will be a new dress, in time for graduation...

muffins for the fam

i've recently been SWAMPED at work.  end of the year, finals impending, whew.  and then this week i was hit with a massive cold.  bleh.  but this weekend the fam got together in my wee apartment to celebrate mother's day early (we always beat the crowds with our holidays hehe).  dad, jimmy, and i went on a 50 mile bike ride... i almost didn't make it back.  apparently we forgot to bring snacks and i totally ran out of blood sugar at about 35 miles.
then saturday night, i baked squash muffins so that we'd have a nice breakfast the next morning.
dad loved them apparently, even asking for seconds.

next up on the sewing docket:  black swiss dot blouses for mom and i (soooo excited to start this!), and still working on dad's xmas/bday/(and now) father's day shirt.  oops.  i don't really enjoy repeat projects...  this will be shirt #4 for him  =)

more stash-busting pj shorts

the fabric scrap stash-busting continued this weekend.  this shooting stars fabric is from one of sarah's old dresses that she accidentally shrank in the wash.  the fabric was super soft.
the faux drawstring bow, so i can tell which side is the front:
leftover fabric from mom's mother's day shirt in 2011!
the cutie bow:
then, today i made some spring cookies!  bunnies, shamrocks, an easter egg (in the far back right), and maple leaves!  (i have the most random cookie cutters)
i know, i'm not the greatest icer.  at least they're better than last year's bunny new year cookies!  i made 2 colors of cookies, pink and green!

scrap-busting pair of pj shorts #1

i had leftover flannel from making jimmy's christmas pj shorts, and since em can fit my pj shorts pattern (i'm just realizing that folks similarly-sized to me are the ones who end up as recipients of all my random sewing projects... i should branch out), i made her a pair!  she loves dogs.  i don't.  i only tolerate them.  now if only i can find myself some bunny flannel...

my usual faux drawstring tie to differentiate between the front and back of the shorts hehe

completed: an april skirt

i finished my april garment! the coral red chevron stripes skirt! check out how beautifully those stripes lined up! holla!
i used more super shiny turquoise cheong-sam fabric for the lining. to help keep the skirt zipped, i made a small button and loop closure for the top of the zipper. (sometimes my skirts unzip, i'm just scandalous like that) to celebrate the end of this quicky project, i actually made a decent dinner: chicken broth with pho noodles, chinese broccoli, fish balls, and mom's pork dumplings! (ok, maybe i make this every night hehehehhe)

i'll be debuting the skirt tomorrow at school, in the 89 degree weather that is forecast for philly tomorrow! oh, and did i mention i'm moving to nyc????

april skirt

with flowers and trees in bloom (ugh, allergies abound), it was time to make a bright and cheery april skirt. i used the same pattern as for my tan and navy paisley skirt, "little black skirt" from "twinkle sews," but omitted the bottom pleats and lengthened each skirt's panel. i used this red and white striped canvas fabric from clearance on an online fabric store, folded the pattern in half, and made chevron stripes! (chevron stripes are a pain to make because you have to make sure that the tilt of your lines is the same on the left and the right.) for the waistband, i was torn between vertical stripes or horizontal...
but after comparing both with the fabrics adjacent, it was clear that vertical waistband stripes would be a eyesore! here's the back panel sewn with the darts for my booty! i had to hang the fabric overnight to force the bias to drape symmetrically. to be continued tonight...

happy bunny day!

my little easter bunny spent the day napping under my bed (he sleeps with his eyes open... the only sign that he's sleeping is that his twitching nose is still)... he has to rest up if he's expected to charm the carrots from everyone he meets!
also, he just finished his 50 lb box of hay!!! who wouldn't nap after such a feat?? happy easter, on my 200th post!

it's almost bunny day!!!

it's almost bunny day!! bunks is excited. he volunteered to model for some photos. here's the sloppy eater at his finest! he prefers to dig all his veggies out of his bowl prior to eating:
and here he is, demanding pets from mom: more to come!

"friends are like stars..."

i have many crafty hobbies. origami is up there (although sewing takes the cake!). when i was a senior in college, i made my beloved godmother a jar of tiny rainbow colored stars with vibrant origami paper. (note to self and aunt stella: must snap a pic of this jar, next time i visit!!) this year, i had planned to make emily her own jar of pretty stars, but of course, time ran out. here's where i got up to by christmas... only half full!
how did i find such tiny origami paper? oh, i made them. i slit big squares into many tiny strips. (for a size reference, each square on my purple cutting mat is .25 inches wide. each strip was cut to be .375 inches wide) origami is mad therapeutic and is an ideal activity for movie/tv-watching because i don't really have to pay attention while i fold. here's the jar, full!
em is moving back to cali this summer and i'm moving to nyc (!!!) so i wanted to include a nostalgic friendship saying on the jar.
"friends are like stars... you don't always see them but you know they're always there. -hulali luta"

happy st. patrick's day!!

for my march garment, i used colette patterns' "sorbetto tank top" to make emily, mom, and i st. patrick's day tops. (yes, mommy, you get one too!!) the shape is a simple boxy tank with a single 2" wide box pleat down the middle. i lowered the neckline a bit, as it was way too high.
i decorated the box pleat by adding a single strip of cream lace, which helped to add to the irish-ness of the top. emily and i wore them today with shiny green nails, stylin' skinny jeans, and chuck taylors (mine are shiny silver of course heheheh). justin bieber wanted "in" on the photoshoot. he's a huge champion of math. hehehhehe

happy valentine's day!!

i finished em's shirt in time for valentine's day. (em loves her holidays!!) in honor of her love for festivities, i wore purple tights with this ensemble!!

happy valentine's day!!

aloha!

my february garment shall be dubbed the aloha shirt! so as you may recall, i work across the street from a very extensive and inexpensive fabric store, gaffney's. they were having a huge president's day sale, additional 50% off all items in the clearance basement! i found this cute aloha-ish thin cotton for super cheap ($1.99/yd i believe), so i bought 2 yds (way more than necessary, but it was so cute and cheap). i had bought this butterick5450 pattern a while back (during joann's $1 pattern sale!) and figured i'd make myself a modest, yet pretty dressy top. you know, for going on dates, i mean going to work! hehehe.
the top on the far left was really simple to make and it fit like a GLOVE, even without any major alterations! the only change i made was that the original neckline seemed extremely high, and even though i have a really long neck, i wanted the line to sit lower. thus i lowered the neckline by an extra 1/8 of an inch (BOLD, i know heheh). the front was pretty visually interesting. long pleat down the middle with 2 smaller ones along the neckline. the back had the same 2 smaller pleats, also along the neckline. david modeled it at work with me again. this time, on his knees, stooping to my level. hehehe. em was our photographer of course. she loved the fabric so much that i'm gonna make her the same top!!

em's velvet pouch!

i had just the tiniest bit of eggplant velvet left, enough to make em a velvet pouch. perfect for her, as she loves purple more than anyone else i know. the pouch was SO easy to make. 2 hrs? (this is amazingly fast for me... i usually spend a weekend making a simple skirt. sorry, but my ocd pays off in good sewing!)
i stitched little beaded tassles at the bottom to help anchor the pouch lining. the black beads are from a hawaiian anklet that broke (em used to live in hawaii!!!) and i ended the tassle with a blue bead to match the randomly blue zipper.the zipper is from a conference tote bag (i hate those free tote bags... however, their zippers are sooo useful!) the lining is a scrap from madeleine's baby's bloomers, a baby shower gift i made 2 years ago! the pouch is big enough to fit em's wallet, keys, and phone. (it's not actually THAT small.)

happy new year!!

today is chinese new year! year of the dragon. bunks' year of glory is over.
we still love you, of course.

martha's pillowcases

i have a friend named martha. no, not martha stewart, thank goodness! she has a very brown couch that she wanted to spruce up. she picked up some fabric a WHILE ago (sorry martha) and i finally had time to design 2 pillowcases for her.
since the fabric is so busy, the only fancy touch i added was thick piping along the edges so that they would look professionally done. not bad, eh? the bottom has a contrasting blue zipper to match the blue in the fabric's pattern. stellar installation, if i do say so myself. and of course, since martha's been feeling under the weather, i wrapped it all nice and pretty. one of my best presentations, as we all know i don't wrap things well!
